I'm forty and remember having used Word for ... MS-DOS!!! It had a kind of WYSIWYG feature. Since I used on my Dad's laptop, with just 1 floppy driver, I had to :
1 - insert MS-DOS floppy to boot the PC
2 - insert MS-Word floppy #1 to start Word
3 - continually swap between Word floppy(s) (can't remember if they were many) and my personnal floppy where I stored my document!
Jee...

I'm french and MS-Word was, at those early times, leader in text processing software, while World Perfect was the worldwide leader. Remember?

the only difference in 2003 from 2002 is not only the graphical look but the increased security and the vast improvements to the plugin structure in it. minor but quite vital changes when you compare them. also the fix of some big bugs in 2002.

I know the original Word was started as a Mac software. But my post is solely focus on the development on Windows platform only.

Also, I don't know much about the Word development on Mac OS plus I don't have the screenshots for Word on Mac OS.

If you're going to do a Word history, you need to start with the 1984 Macintosh. Word was the first non-Apple word processor, and IT, not the DOS version of Word, is the great-grandfather of the current version of Word. Without the Mac to learn how to program a GUI word processor, WordPerfect would be the dominant word processor!
